mentorship program

Purpose

The purpose of the BBANYS mentoring program is to provide BBANYS members who are in the early stage of their career with assistance and support from a more experienced professional.

Goal

The BBANYS mentoring program aims to cultivate lasting relationships among professionals in the blood banking/transfusion medicine and cellular therapy fields.  The goal of the BBANYS mentoring program is to help mentees successfully acquire key competences for their job function such as technical proficiency, scholarly activities, educational skills, academic advancement, as well as the development of constructive professional relationships (professional networks).

Requirements

The BBANYS mentoring program is one year long.  Mentors and mentees must be BBANYS members and apply for participation in the program and submit a CV or resume.  Mentors must have at least 3 years of experience in their chosen profession.  Mentors and mentees must make arrangements to meet at least once every 2 months.

Roles and Responsibilities

Mentor Roles

• Advise mentee on overall professional goals and career choices
• Facilitate professional networking
• Provide career advancement opportunities (e.g. manuscript and lecture opportunities)
• Set clear rules regarding meetings (format, frequency, agenda, and deliverables)
• Provide constructive feedback
• Act as an advocate, role model, coach, and supporter
• Respect personal boundaries

Mentee Roles

• Identify specific development goals for which guidance is needed
• Coordinate meeting times and agendas with mentor
• Prepare deliverables for mentor review
• Develop listening skills and willingness to work outside of “comfort zones”
• Solicit and consider thoughtful feedback
• Respect personal boundaries
