Speaker Bio:
Dr. Nguyen graduated from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 2018. She completed her pathology and laboratory medicine residency at University of Kentucky Healthcare in 2021 and did her transfusion medicine fellowship at Mayo Clinic - Rochester, Minnesota. She is the transfusion medicine rotation director and an attending physician in transfusion medicine at University of Rochester Medical Center since 2022.

Abstract:

The history of blood banking and transfusion medicine has a long history of controversial implications and applications of modern scientific methods within the field. This presentation will cover the full spectrum of how the specialty has come full circle from the cautions about blood transfusions in early history to the modern day patient blood management movement. 

Objectives:

At the end of this session, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the symbolic and scientific implications of blood transfusions in early history.
  2. Elaborate the evolution of transfusion medicine methods in modern history.
  3. Appreciate the full circle of patient blood management regarding the safety and efficacy of transfusions.
