Topic:
Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia: New Insights from Preclinical Models

Speaker:
Krystalyn E. Hudson, PhD
Columbia University

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Krystalyn E. Hudson is an Associate Professor at Columbia University and Co-Director of the Laboratory of Transfusion Biology. She received her PhD from Emory University and completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Scripps Research Institute. Dr. Hudson’s NIH funded research focuses on immune responses to red blood cells (RBCs), which is relevant for transfusion medicine, pregnancy, and transplantation. Her team developed two new innovative preclinical murine models of autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA); these models led to the discovery of a 3-week tolerization window for RBC autoreactive T cells, identified a new T cell subset that predicts tolerance failure and AIHA onset, and revealed new therapeutic targets.

Abstract:

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia is the most frequently reported immune-related adverse event to checkpoint inhibitor immunotherapy. To elucidate the mechanistic underpinnings leading to AIHA, we developed a new preclinical model. This session will discuss findings from this model, highlighting discovery of a new biomarker that predicts AIHA onset and a novel therapeutic target.

Objectives:

  1. Describe a new preclinical model of AIHA
  2. Discuss a new cell subset that can be used to predict AIHA
  3. Describe a new AIHA treatment option
