Topic: Cold Stored Platelets: A Primer
Speaker: Phuong-Lan Nguyen, MD Assistant Professor, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine - Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine University of Rochester Medical Center
Speaker Bio: Dr. Nguyen graduated from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 2018. She completed her pathology and laboratory medicine residency at University of Kentucky Healthcare in 2021 and did her transfusion medicine fellowship at Mayo Clinic - Rochester, Minnesota. She is now the transfusion medicine rotation director and an attending physician in transfusion medicine at University of Rochester Medical Center since 2022.
Abstract: Cold stored platelets are thought to be better at hemostasis via physical changes in platelet biology while room temperature platelets are better at platelet count increments. There are many benefits and drawbacks, mostly operational and logistical, to cold stored platelets. This presentation will seek to explore the implications of cold stored platelets on platelet biology and implementation in blood banks.
