Speaker Bio:

Dr. Jimenez is an Associate Director of Transfusion Medicine and Cellular Biotherapies Laboratory and Director of Transfusion Medicine Education at Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Jimenez has been a Vice President, Medical Director at New York Blood Center Enterprises, where she oversaw myriad services, including an HLA laboratory, transfusion services, a cord blood program, and an apheresis service. She serves on the AABB Blood Bank and Transfusion Service Standards Committee as well as the AABB Donor Health and Safety Committee. Her major research interests include the epidemiology, pathogenesis and laboratory evaluation of transfusion-associated viral infections, as well as blood safety implications of new and emerging transfusion-transmissible infectious diseases. She is also interested in transfusion management, laboratory development, and improving patient safety.

Abstract:

This presentation highlights the essential role of physicians in blood centers, covering their responsibilities in donor selection, blood product safety, and quality control. It explores how physicians contribute to the collection, manufacturing, and distribution of blood, while also managing clinical services and participating in research initiatives. Attendees will gain insights into the ethical challenges, leadership roles, and the impact physicians have on advancing the field of transfusion medicine.

Objectives:

1. Gain a comprehensive understanding of physicians' roles in blood centers.

2. Identify key challenges and ethical considerations faced by physicians in blood centers.

3. Explore physicians' contributions to advancing blood center operations and research.
