Ronald Hauser, MD

Founder, President

Yale University School of Medicine Transfusion Antibody Exchange

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Hauser practices Clinical Pathology and Informatics at the Yale School of Medicine, where he completed his medical school and residency. He is the VA Site Director of the Yale/VA AGCME Medical Informatics Fellowship.

Abstract:

Patient transfusion histories (e.g., alloantibodies, antigens) are essential to safe transfusion. Yet, a national system to exchange them does not exist despite over a dozen peer-reviewed research articles supporting the concept. We will review the scientific motivation and technological developments making this a possibility with action from the transfusion community.

Objectives:

1) Identify why an antibody screen cannot detect evanescence alloantibodies, necessitating the need for historical alloantibody histories to prevent delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions

2) Describe the basic components and operation of a national system to exchange transfusion histories

3) Learn the steps blood banks can take to self-assemble into networks that exchange transfusion histories

Disclosures:

Ronald is a volunteer and founder of the Alloantibody Exchange. He receives no direct or indirect compensation for this work.
