Speaker Bio:
Dr. Refaai is a Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York. He is also the Director of the Thrombosis and Hemostasis Lab, the Associate Director of the Transfusion Medicine/Blood Bank, and the Associate Director of the Clinical Laboratory Department at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Dr. Refaai also has an appointment in the Internal Medicine/Hematology Department at Strong Memorial Hospital as an Associate Director of the Therapeutic Apheresis Unit. Dr. Refaai is also an Associate Director of the Pathology Residency Program at the University of Rochester Medical Center and the Director of Transfusion Medicine Fellowship as well. Dr. Refaai received his medical degree from the Aleppo University School of Medicine in Syria. He then joined Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard University in Boston, MA as a research fellow in a special coagulation research lab. Dr. Refaai completed a residency in clinical pathology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and held a fellowship in transfusion medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. His research focuses on the in vitro and in vivo effects of ABO antibodies on platelet function, coagulation, and endothelial cell function. He is also involved in clinical trials of emergency reversal of coagulopathy, as well as treatments for deep vein thrombosis and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. Dr. Refaai has over 100 peer reviewed published articles and about 13 book chapters.
Abstract:
This presentation will include discussion on the fundamental components and intricate processes involved in the normal hemostasis mechanism, including the roles of platelets, clotting factors, and endothelial cells. Several clinical scenarios will be presented in order to analyze appropriate indications for anticoagulation therapy, taking into account patient-specific factors and risk assessments and appropriate laboratory assays used to monitor anticoagulation therapy.
Objectives:
1) Identify and describe the critical elements of the normal hemostasis mechanism.
2) List typical indications for anticoagulation therapy.
3) Describe the most common lab assays used to monitor anticoagulation therapy.
